Letter: Politics of wealth and Trump

We will become enslaved, but instead of the chains being on our hands because we have to work FOR them, they will be on our tongues and minds. Paraphrased from the 1943 movie "Keeper of the Flame' Some say it can be interpreted as a warning against facism in our country.

Letter: Some say more, some say less

I believe the Independent Star News does a fine job of following its guidelines while not stifling free speech. I enjoy the balance of letters from Bruno and Gorak.

If a person is obviously overweight, he is going to get some blowback from calling people “Piggy.”

Some people might even say, “Look in the mirror.”

Letter: Challenging a single story

When President Trump labeled Somali immigrants “garbage,” he weaponized presidential power to diminish an entire community. As novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie warned in her TED Talk “The Danger of a Single Story,” power lies not only in the ability to tell another person’s story, but to make it the definitive story of that person.

Letter: Celebrate holidays and spirit of America

Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, were said repeatedly this holiday season. Wishing all the best is a long American tradition. Under the greetings should be a realization that all people deserve a fulfilling life.

Nature and Society, Dec. 25, 2025

It's an odd situation when you have to wait up for your cats. I needed to get to bed because I am fighting one of those nasty cold weather respiratory .invasions, but drama never ceases at holiday time! My cats, accustomed to living quietly with one old woman, freak out when I have company.

STANEK COLUMN: Relishing the humor of Christmas

This is one of the best seasons for funny moments. There’s just so much that can go just right…or very wrong.

Since this should be a warm and enjoyable time of year, I thought I’d share some of my favorite comedic moments from personal life.
