Soccer Vanguards stun Lodi

When Lodi came to Wisconsin Heights on Tuesday, it was undefeated in conference play. The L-Cats didn’t leave that way. Heights/Barneveld stunned Lodi by building a 4-0 halftime lead and rolling to an impressive 4-1 win. The Vanguards moved into a second-place tie in the Capitol Conference behind league-leading Sugar River. Just nine minutes into the game, Vanguards Caeben Schomber took a corner kick and Gavin Childs converted for a 1-0 lead. In the 25th minute, freshman Sam King found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Minutes later, Heights/Barneveld was awarded a free kick. Braydan Cymbalak took the kick and Rhead Jacobus put it away making it 3-0. “It was a great start to the game,” Heights coach Bartlett Holmes said. “The whole team came out ready to play and we built the early lead.” At 33 minutes, Schomber played a ball in close, Childs was able to connect with his left foot and gave Heights/Barneveld a 4-0 lead. “The first half was fun to watch,” Holmes said. “We showed what we are able to do when we’re all on the same page and giving 100%.” Heights/Barneveld had several scoring chances in the second half, but Lodi’s defense stiffened. The L-Cats converted a penalty kick to make it 4-1, but it wasn’t nearly enough. “In the second half we had chances,” Holmes said. “But we seemed like a different team. We can’t slow down like that in conference games.” • On deck: Heights/Barneveld was at Belleville Tuesday to face against Sugar River. “We have to give it our all for the full 90 minutes,” Holmes said.
