Heights girls split first two games

Wisconsin Heights’ girls basketball team split its first two games of the season last week. The Vanguards defeated Pardeeville, 57-27, last Tuesday. Defending WIAA Division 5 state champs Black Hawk then downed the Vanguards, 76-37, last Friday. In Heights’ win over Pardeeville, Natalie Hering led a balanced attack with 12 points. Sydnee Duhr and Ashlee Adler both added nine points and Kelsi Handel chipped in with eight. The Vanguards raced to a 31-13 halftime lead and never looked back. Heights forced 35 turnovers which led to 32 points. “We came out pressured them on defense right out of the gate,” Heights coach Bill Sullivan said. “The kids came out with great energy and intensity jumped out to an early lead “I thought we shared the ball well, having 16 assists for the game and everybody looked to score. It was nice to get that first one of the year.” Unfortunately for the Vanguards, things didn’t go nearly as well against Black Hawk. Black Hawk raced to a 44-24 halftime lead and continued to pull away. Ashlee Adler led the Vanguards with nine points, while Handel had eight. “I thought we came out played well the first 15 minutes of the first half,” Sullivan said. “We had an opportunity to hang with them, but missed a couple of layups. I thought we attacked well in the first half, but some baskets didn’t fall for us. They took advantage of turnovers and second chance opportunities and converted them into points. “I thought the kids played hard, but against teams like Blackhawk you can’t afford to turn the ball over and give them easy opportunities. I thought we did a nice job of breaking their press, but struggled in halfcourt getting sped up and not running our offensive sets.
