Three Eagles spikers named all-league

Sauk Prairie’s girls volleyball team enjoyed a sensational season, going 31-14 overall. And the Eagles were justly rewarded, landing three players on the all-Northern Badger Conference team. Senior libero Ainsley Apel, junior setter/outside hitter Olivia Breunig and sophomore outside hitter Aida Shadewald were all named second-team all-conference. Both Apel and Breunig were also named honorable-mention all-state. Apel led the Eagles in digs (534) and ended her high school career with 1,854 career digs. Apel was second on the team in service percentage (94.2%) and second on the team in aces (49). Apel, a four-year starter, was also a team captain this year. “Her talents will be greatly missed,” Sauk Prairie coach Amy Schlimgen said of Apel. Breunig (far right)led the Eagles in assists with 462, was second on the team in kills (364), third on the team in digs (245) and third on the team in aces (44). “She’s an extremely talented athlete who is the quarterback of our team,” Schlimgen said of Breunig. “She never came off of the floor. She was also a team captain.” Shadewald (middle) led the Eagles in kills (443), led the team in service aces (85), was second in digs (320) and third in blocks (44). “She’s a great all-around player,” Schlimgen said. “She will be one of the top hitters in the conference next year.” Sauk Prairie also recently handed out its 2019 awards at its postseason banquet. Among those honored were: • Junior Olivia Breunig was named the Eagles’ Most Valuable Player. • Senior Ainsley Apel earned a four year letter winner award. • Senior middle blocker Madison Pertzborn was named the Eagles’ Most Improved Player. • Junior Defensive Specialist Kaitlyn Brickl received the best service percentage award (94.7%) and the Hustle Award. • Senior right side hitter Madylin Setterlund received a four-year letter winner award.
