Eagles’ girls have up and down week

It was a tale of two ends of the spectrum, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows for the Sauk Prairie girls basketball team last week. The Eagles began the week by rallying from a five-point halftime deficit to soar past visiting Lodi, 60-49, on Jan. 21. But two days later, host Reedsburg roared out to a 35-point halftime lead and recorded a 76-62 victory over the Eagles in a Badger North Conference game. “It was a combination of not being on the same page, and they were making their shots,” Sauk Prairie coach Amber Fiene said after Reedsburg opened up a 51-16 halftime lead. “We missed a couple of layups to start and turned it over a couple of times. We never really got out of our funk.” Freshman forward Maggie Hartwig turned in another strong performance, leading Sauk Prairie (8-7, 2-6 Badger North) with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Hartwig also had three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Junior guard Olivia Breunig added 10 points and two rebounds for the Eagles, who shot 35.3% from the floor (24 of 68), including 25.0% from behind the arc (3 of 12). Sophomore forward Olivia Paukner chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Ella Schad had another all-around solid performance with seven points, five assists and five steals for the Eagles. Reedsburg (11-4, 5-3) finished with four players in double figures led by Mahra Wieman, who poured in 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. Trenna Cherney chipped in 17 points, while Melissa Dietz added 16 points, and Grace Benish had 11 points for the Beavers. Hartwig scored 13 points after halftime as the Eagles outscored Reedsburg, 46-25, to salvage some pride. “We came out definitely different,” Fiene said. “I made some changes and found some players with better attitudes and were willing to work and it worked out fine. I just wish we could have had that first half back.” • Sauk Prairie 60, Lodi 49 — Naomi Breunig scored 14 of her 24 points in the second half to help the Eagles extend their winning streak to three games. “They are a physical team and we’ve struggled against that in the past,” coach Amber Fiene said. “But we battled and finally got a little run and got a lead.” Naomi Breunig also finished with six rebounds, five assists, eight steals and a blocked shot for the Eagles (8-6).  “Naomi did a nice job,” Fiene said. “She had a solid all-around game.” Sophomore guard Kassia Marquardt also finished in double figures for Sauk Prairie with 10 points and added three rebounds and three steals. Maggie Hartwig chipped in with seven points and six rebounds. “I was proud of her. We saw her deliver on her potential,” Fiene said of Marquardt. “She played a nice game against Reedsburg as well. She played some good defense and brought some good energy. “Maggie works so hard and is so fun to watch on the boards, rebounding like crazy on both ends. She can also play at the top and the back of our jump and run. She is an exciting player to watch.” Lauryn Milne led Lodi (6-6) with 23 points. • On deck: Following a Badger North Conference game at Mount Horeb on Tuesday, Sauk Prairie will host Baraboo on Saturday on Alumni Night at 7:15 p.m. The Eagles then host Portage in conference game on ‘Cancer Awareness Night’ on Feb. 4 at 7:15 p.m.   Jan. 21 Sauk Prairie 60, Lodi 49 Lodi …….…....…... 27 22 — 49 Sauk Prairie ......… 22 38 — 60 LODI (fg ft-fta pts) — Lauryn Milne 7 6-8 23, Jaden Kolinski 4 4-6 15, Taylor Ripp 0 3-4 3, Morgan McNeil 1 2-2 4, Ella Puls 2 0-0 4. Kuhnau finished first with personal-best marks in the balance beam (9.1), floor exercise (9.2) and in compiling the top all-around score (34.6). She was also first on the vault (8.55). Sauk Prairie won three of the four event titles — vault (32.00), balance beam (31.05) and floor exercise (33.475) “They had an incredible night, coming up over seven points from Holmen and three points from our highest team score this year,” Sauk Prairie coach Justine Anderson said. “We did have the advantage of being on our home equipment, but they also looked really good.”  Monona Grove’s Ellie Van Veghel won the vault (8.55). The Silver Eagles won the uneven bars event (27.05). Sophomore Ava Putnam rcorded personal-records on the balance beam (8.2), floor exercise (8.45) and the all-around (30.975). Kuhanu also broke the school record on beam and floor exercise, previously set in 1999. “She has been working extremely hard and definitely deserves the scores she received,” Anderson said of Kuhnau. “She is setting the tone for some of the other girls as well those who want to reach those scores in the future and her work ethic at practice has been incredible. “The continued increased team scores as well as the dual win only fuels the fire.” • On deck: Following a Badger Conference dual against Reedsburg on Tuesday, Sauk Prairie will compete in a dual at Milton on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.   Jan. 23 Sauk Prairie 122.05, Monona Grove 118.65 Vault: 1, Van Veghel, MG, 8.55; 2, Heidi Kuhnau, SP. 8.45; 3, Ava Putnam, SP, 8.0.
