Sauk Prairie wrestlers heating up

It was the perfect setting for one of the Sauk Prairie wrestling team’s best performances of the season. The host Eagles celebrated ‘Youth Night’ and ‘Take Down the House Night’ with a convincing 51-25 victory over Beaver Dam/Wayland Academy in a Badger North Conference dual last Thursday night. That extended Sauk Prairie’s dual winning streak to three matches and improved the Eagles to 3-3 in conference duals and 8-10 overall. “We were definitely ready to rock and roll,” Sauk Prairie coach Matt Gaffney said. “We wanted to put on a show for those future Eagles and give those young kids something to shoot for.” Sauk Prairie then traveled to Fort Atkinson to compete in the Terry Kramer TKO Open last Saturday and tied for seventh-place out of 17 schools with 251 points. Against Beaver Dam/Wayland Academy, Sauk Prairie earned seven pins, piling on the bonus points after the visiting Golden Beavers took advantage of three forfeits in the first five matches for a quick 21-6 lead. But the Eagles dominated the rest of the way, winning eight of the final nine bouts, including six pins. Senior Dawson Enge at 120, sophomore Dylan Breunig (126) and junior Luis Elizondo (132) all earned first-period pins to close out the dual for Sauk Prairie. Junior Carson Saladis got the meet off to a great start for the Eagles with a pin in just 79 seconds. After Beaver Dam/Wayland Academy took the next four matches, senior Marcus Hankins jump-started Sauk Prairie’s rally when he pinned Dakota Lillie in 3:09 at 182 pounds. “That got it going, and we built on each win,” Gaffney said. The Eagles continued their dominance at the upper weights this season when freshman Nolan Vils (195) recorded a pin, senior Simon Patterson (220) received a forfeit and senior Austin Rider (285) made quick work of Jayden Corr with a pin in just 21 seconds for a 30-21 lead.  Sophomore Riley Minette also secured an 8-4 decision over Eduardo Tostado at 113 pounds. • Terry Kramer TKO Open: Marcus Hankins won the 182-pound title and Simon Patterson (220) and Austin Rider (285) each finished second to pace the Eagles. Hankins, who is ranked eighth at 195 in the WiWrestling.com Division 1 rankings, improved to 33-3 with a 4-3 decision over Fort Atkinson’s Thomas Witkins in the championship match. Patterson improved to 23-5, while Rider, who is ranked eighth at 285 pounds, improved to 33-3. Jelinek had a goal and five assists as Sauk Prairie jumped out to a five-goal first-period lead en route to an 8-4 victory over host Baraboo/Portage in a Badger North Conference victory on Jan. 21. But Jelinek was even more impressive in a dominant 9-2 victory over Milton/Fort Atkinson in a non-conference game at the Sauk Prairie Area Recreation Center Ice Arena last Friday night. Jelinek recorded a hat trick — in the first period — and finished with five goals and one assist to help Sauk Prairie improve to 11-2 overall, including a 5-2 record in conference play. Jelinek leads Sauk Prairie in goals (24), assists (30) and points (54). But it was far from just the Riley Jelinek show last week. In the win over Baraboo/Portage (9-7, 2-4) sophomore forward Nick Mast recorded his third hat trick of the season, scoring four goals. Senior Dylan Andrews, freshman Luke Mast and senior Camden Desroches also contributed goals. Sauk Prairie outshot Baraboo/Portage, 55-13, with senior Jordan O’Connor needing to make just nine saves. Against Milton (3-13), Desroches also had a hat trick, his second of the season, and senior Lance Bauernhuber added a goal. But eight different players also recorded an assist with Nick Mast finishing with two assists.  It was the second victory of the season for the Eagles over Milton/Fort Atkinson, after they prevailed 4-2 at Milton on Dec. 7. Sauk Prairie dominated the Red Hawks, with an overwhelming 62-5 edge in shots on goal.
