Heights girls drop a pair

It was a rough week for Wisconsin Heights’ girls basketball team. And with the regular season nearing the end, the Vanguards hope to turn things around as soon as possible. Heights lost at Cambridge, 59-55, last Thursday. The Vanguards then dropped a 46-41 decision to Cuba City last Saturday at Just A Game Field House in Wisconsin Dells. Heights is now 7-11 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Capitol Conference. Hana King and Kelsi Handel both had 13 points in the Vanguards’ loss to Cambridge. Ashlee Adler added nine points and Natalie Hering had eight. Cambridge raced to a 31-19 halftime lead and pushed its advantage to 16 early in the second half. The Vanguards went on a 16-3 run to get themselves back in the game, and later took a seven-point lead.  Down the stretch, though, Heights had some untimely turnovers that Cambridge turned into easy baskets and the Blue Jays notched a win. “We did a nice job of getting defensive stops and fought back,” Heights coach Bill Sullivan said. “Tough loss, but proud of how they responded in the second half.” In Heights’ loss to Cuba City, freshman Emily Van Riper had 12 points and King added eight. Miranda Keith also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Vanguards. Heights held a 19-17 halftime lead, but Cuba City took a second half lead, then went into a delay with 7:30 left. The Vanguards were eventually forced to foul, and the Cubans went 16-of-23 from the line in the second half. “We did a nice job limiting them paint points, but when teams play that style of delay, you are in chase mode and have to put them at the line when you are behind,” Sullivan said. “We had opportunities, but came up short.” • On deck: Heights hosted Waterloo Tuesday, then travels to Belleville Friday at 7:30 p.m. Heights coach Bill Sullivan will also attend the postseason meeting this week.
