Heights boys receive No. 10 seed

Wisconsin Heights’ boys basketball team is slumping as it heads to the postseason. The Vanguards dropped all three games they played last week and have now lost nine of 10. Wisconsin Heights (8-15) also found out Sunday that it received the No. 10 seed in its half of its WIAA Division 4 sectional. The Vanguards begin the postseason at seventh-seeded Brodhead in a regional quarterfinal on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game travels to second-seeded Darlington for a regional semifinal on March 1. Here’s a look back at the Vanguards’ week. • Cambridge 64, Wisconsin Heights 43 — Senior Jon Vosburg led the Vanguards with 15 points while junior Reed Adler had nine points and four assists. Junior Mike Fanscali added eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Cambridge standout Nick Buckman led all scorers with 32 points. “We could not contain Nick Buckman,” Heights coach Nolan Krentz said. “He proved why his is the favorite for conference player of the year.” Heights trailed just 29-20 at halftime and closed within six points early in the second half. But the host Bluejays eventually pulled away. • Waterloo 63, Wisconsin Heights 51 — The host Vanguards led, 28-23, at halftime. But the Pirates pulled away in the second half. “We played arguably our best first half,” Krentz said. “In the second half, we started very sluggish. Unfortunately, we were our own worst enemy as has been the case many games this season.” Heights finished the game with 27 turnovers, including 17 in the second half. The Vanguards also gave up 17 offensive rebounds, which led to several easy Waterloo baskets.   Mike Fanscali led the Vanguards with 15 points and six rebounds, while Reed Adler had 12 points and a team-high eight assists. Jon Vosburg chipped in nine points and four assists and sophomore Nathan Pietrzykowski added four assists. “This result was definitely a bit disappointing as we played much better in stretches than we had the first time we met last month,” said Krentz, whose team lost, 73-38, to Waterloo on Jan. 23. “We certainly had our chances throughout the game to come out on top.”  • Belleville 95, Wisconsin Heights 52 — The Vanguards trailed, 42-29, at halftime. But host Belleville erupted for 53 second half points and ran away after intermission. “I do not know if it was fatigue from playing the night before or three games in one week, but our effort was not there in the second half and it showed on the defensive end of the court,” Krentz said. “Belleville’s relentless pressure wore us out too, leading to many turnovers and points in transition throughout the game.” Vosburg led Heights with 19 points while Fanscali had 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Pietrzykowski added seven points along with five rebounds.   • On deck: Heights is at Marshall on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. “Hopefully, we can turn the page and build some momentum in that game before heading into regional play,” Krentz said.
