Softball Eagles eliminated by Mount Horeb

Mount Horeb’s girls softball team was the No. 1 seed in its sectional. And Sauk Prairie found out why on May 22. The host Vikings rolled past the Eagles, 10-0, in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal. The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Mount Horeb improved to 19-3, then defeated fourth-seeded Wisconsin Dells, XXX, on May 23 to advance to the sectional semifinals. Sauk Prairie finished the year 4-19. Mount Horeb freshman Jozie Clifton hurled a five-inning gem, allowing five hits and no walks. Clifton struck out three and threw strikes on 50 of 71 pitches (70.4%). Gina Rhiner belted a three-run home run for the Vikings, while JoJo Murray had a double, two hits and three RBI. Maddie Swiggum added two RBI, while Ruby Dahlk and Morgan Monroe both had two hits. Riley Kerl took the loss for Sauk Prairie, allowing six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Kerl gave up 10 hits, walked five and struck out two. Lexi Cegielski led the Eagles’ offense, going 2-for-2. Sauk Prairie had defeated Sparta, 9-8, in its regional quarterfinal and was looking for its first two-game winning streak of the year.
