Five Vanguards named all-conference
Wisconsin Heights’ baseball team had a rough season on the diamond.
But the Vanguards did just fine when it came to all-conference voting.
Sophomore center fielder Quinn Payne, junior third baseman Fin Hinderman and junior utility player Reed Adler were all named second-team all-Capitol South Conference. Freshman catcher Charlie Reader and sophomore left fielder Zac Sander both received honorable-mention all-conference honors.
Adler was a team captain and Heights’ MVP. Adler hit .333 in conference games and .403 overall.
Adler also posted a 3.68 ERA in more than 38 innings of work. He earned utility player honors after playing at least three positions.
“Reed was the mainstay of our pitching staff as others battled through injuries,” Heights manager Ted Severson said. “He also started games at catcher and shortstop, and his versatility is what led him to all-conference utility player.”
Payne hit .312 in conference games and led the Vanguards in overall batting average, hitting .412 in 21 games.
“Quinn is a great leadoff hitter and difference maker, as he chased down balls all year including a robbing Marshall’s Matthew Motl of a home run,” Heights manager Ted Severson said. “He has a great arm and his speed will be a huge asset over the next two seasons.”
Hinderman hit .291 in conference play while battling through a lingering shoulder injury, which prevented him from being one of the anchors of the Vanguards’ pitching staff.
“I’m looking forward to seeing this team captain healthy and what he can do in his final season,” Severson said.
Reader hit .321 in conference play while only striking out twice in 28 at bats. He also led the Vanguards with six RBI in league games only.
“I’m looking forward to seeing this young catcher develop over the next three seasons,” Severson said.
Sander played terrific defense all season, catching several shots to the gap that helped prevent runs.
“Zac can play pretty much anywhere as he started most games on the infield his freshman year, but switched to left field this year to help the team,” Severson said.
