Eagles’ girls basketball team drops two of three

Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team dropped two of three games over the holiday break. Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ games: • Madison Edgewood 55, Sauk Prairie 33 — The Crusaders are the defending WIAA Division 2 state champions and ranked No. 2 in the state again this year. Edgewood showed why, holding a 25-2 edge in points off of turnovers and downing the Eagles last Saturday. “I was very pleased with our effort and intensity against Edgewood,” Sauk Prairie coach Jacob Breunig said. “They are a solid team that is very well coached. They have so many good players they create matchup issues for us.   “I do think we did a good job defensively holding them to 55 points. We limited points from some of their leading scorers, but as all good and balanced teams do they had others pick up and take over.” Despite the loss, Breunig saw far more good than bad — and thinks this game could be a springboard for his team. “We will grow from this game,” he said. “If we can play with this passion, energy, intensity, and for each other like this the rest of the season I am excited to see if we can get on a roll going into the second half.” • LaCrosse Central 50, Sauk Prairie 37 — The Eagles fell to the RiverHawks on Dec. 27. “This was a tough game over winter break,” Breunig said. “We knew we were going to be playing a tough opponent. We never really got it going on the offensive end. Again, we had opportunities, but turnovers and missed chances to finish around the rim are going to continually come back and haunt us.” • Sauk Prairie 63, La Crosse Logan 24 — Everyone on the Eagles’ roster scored and they rolled past the Rangers on Dec. 27. Sauk Prairie shot 45% from the field, made 8-of-21 3-pointers (38.1%) and held Logan to five points in the second half. “We tried to use the trip to La Crosse to bond as a team, and the girls did a lot more playing for each other in this game,” Breunig said. “We shot the ball well which helps. “This was also a game that every girl on our team got to contribute to. Defensively we played really solid … and I was very pleased with our effort.  I hope they can continue to take it with us going forward.” • On deck: The Eagles were at McFarland Tuesday, then host Reedsburg Friday at 7:15 p.m.
