Sauk Prairie boys get mixed results

Sauk Prairie’s boys basketball team split a pair of games last week. The Eagles defeated Monroe, 67-52, on Jan. 7. Baraboo then rolled past Sauk Prairie, 71-46, on Jan. 9. The Eagles are now 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the Badger Small Conference. Here’s a recap of Sauk Prairie’s week. • Sauk Prairie 67, Monroe 52 — Boden Breunig had four 3-pointers and 21 points to lead the Eagles past the Cheesemakers. Nick Keyser added 18 points, while Otis Andres had 12 points and Braden Schaaf added 11. Breunig hit five 3-pointers in the first half as the Eagles built a 38-31 lead. Sauk Prairie then held Monroe to just 21 second half points. “We battled really hard,” Eagles coach Sean McGann said. “Our defense was outstanding in the second half for us to really pull away.” • Baraboo 71, Sauk Prairie 46 — The Eagles trailed, 33-17, at halftime and couldn’t mount a second half threat. Otis Andres led the Eagles with 12 points. Alex Hannagan had 21 points to lead the Thunderbirds. “I’m not sure if it was fatigue or what, but we struggled all night,” McGann said. “A coach I really respect once told me that throughout high school season, you will have two games where you can do no right, two where you can do no wrong, two games where the opponent can do no right, and two where they can do no wrong. The rest of the games are coaching.  “Baraboo was a night where we could do no right and Baraboo could do no wrong. They outplayed us in nearly every aspect of the game, and we couldn’t guard them at all.” • On deck: The Eagles were at Stoughton Tuesday, then are at Madison Edgewood Friday at 7:15 p.m.
