Eagles’ girls basketball team wins two of three

Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team was extremely busy last week, playing three games in five nights. The Eagles also fared quite well, winning two of those contests. Sauk Prairie rolled past Lake Mills, 53-18, on Feb. 4. The Eagles crushed Portage, 70-28, on Feb. 7. Sauk Prairie was then edged by DeForest, 56-47, on Feb. 8. The Eagles are now 11-9 overall and 7-4 in the Badger Small Conference. Here’s a recap of Sauk Prairie’s week: Sauk Prairie 53, Lake Mills 18 — Macee Gulden had 13 points to lead three Eagles in double figures. Gulden added eight rebounds and a steal. Ava Brings had 12 points, three steals and two blocks, while Haylie Bader had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals. Mallory Hartwig added eight points, four rebounds three assists and two steals, while Savannah Liegel had five rebounds, two steals and three points. The Eagles held Lake Mills to just four points in the first half and were never challenged. “We played great defense,” Eagles coach Jacob Breunig said.  “Our offense was working well and we did a lot of great things in the game. I was incredibly pleased with our effort in this game.” • Sauk Prairie 70, Portage 28 — Audrey Brickl had 15 points and led four Eagles in double figures. Macee Gulden, Ava Brings and Mallory Hartwig all added 11 points for Sauk Prairie. “Holding a team to 28 is good,” Breunig said. “But I was not real pleased with our effort on the defensive end in the first half.   “We did a great job attacking their zone and giving ourselves easy baskets. The inside out game was good allowing us to get good looks. The way we came out to play in the second half is how we need to play all the time.” • DeForest 56, Sauk Prairie 47 — The Norskies rallied in the second half to knock off the host Eagles. “This game stings,” Breunig said. “We self-destructed in the second half and committed way too many turnovers against their zone and pressure. We need to figure out collectively as a group how to be better when we are pressured and not be so scared to make mistakes, because when we play scared we are continually turning the ball over and getting sped up. We need to work on finding our inner toughness and be willing to accept challenges.” The WIAA will announce its postseason seeds on Sunday, and Breunig believes the loss to DeForest could be costly.  “This game will hurt us in the seeding process,” he said. “We did a lot of good things against DeForest and when we got into our offense were able to be successful. We talked to the girls at half about the biggest issue in this game will be getting from point A to point B in our offense and that was in fact what defeated us in this game.” • On deck: The Eagles hosted Madison Edgewood Tuesday, then are at Baraboo Friday at 7:15 p.m.
