Naturally Speaking: Corn dent

Farmers’ field corn is starting to dent. 

A dent or depression shows on the ends of the kernels resulting from the “flinty” or ridged kernel sides compared to the softer, starchy tops and cores of kernels.

When the kernels dry and lose moisture this top end collapse or dent inward on field corn varieties.

Aug. 11 is a good time to remember to contact Diggers Hotline before you plan any digging or excavation projects.

Residents can dial 811 to find out if there is any underground infrastructure in the way of their project. State law requires people to check in advance before they dig.

District Attorney says no charges for officers involved in shooting

District Attorney Ismael Ozanne’s Office concluded shortly after noon on Monday, Aug. 12, that there is no potential criminal court liability for Village of Mount Horeb police officers involved in the fatal shooting that occurred outside Mount Horeb Middle School on May 1.

Naturally Speaking: Swallowtail butterflies

Most have seen the largest US and Canada butterfly without knowing it.

The giant swallowtail is up to 140mm (5.5 inches) from wing tip to wing tip. This mostly black insect has rows of yellow dots forming an X on both front wings.

This swallowtail is often seen in flower beds and upland prairies.

First West Nile virus case confirmed in Wisconsin

Wisconsin residents are urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites in light of the first confirmed case of West Nile virus in the state.

The Department of Health Services found the virus in a healthy blood donor in Washington County. Around the same time, a dead bird in Chippewa County tested positive for the virus.

After eaglets fledge, the family of male, female and young becomes even looser with neither parent or just the larger female or smaller male being close to the youngster.

Naturally Speaking: Muskrats

The common muskrat is most active at dusk, dawn, and night but may be seen at all times, in all seasons. 

It’s equipped to swim, having somewhat webbed hind feet and uses a rat-type tail as a rudder to steer.  These mammals can back pedal.
