All the nesting, laying, feeding and fledging are of little concern right now. It’s the beginning of winter feeding, snow falling, and in the not-so-distant future shadow window boxing on sunny side windows.

Cardinals will take food in most ways, ground feeding, and feeder eating when all's covered with a dusting of snow.

Flambeau hires sales manager

Karl Swee has joined Flambeau as territory sales manager for western Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas and Montana.

Swee is based out of the Twin Cities. He will focus on attracting new customers and serving current clients.

“I look forward to the opportunity to bring quality new business to Flambeau,” Swee said in a statement.

Historical Society acquires Baraboo train depot

Baraboo’s historic train depot is now part of the Sauk County Historical Society.

On Oct. 23, the family of Gordon and Ann Glorch, including children Sally Glorch, Susan Elieff, and Gordon Glorch and grandchildren and great grandchildren, turned over ownership to the nonprofit.

Naturally Speaking: Snowflakes on fern fronds

Real snowflakes make interesting additions to winter holiday cards but they don’t show well piled atop one another.

Green is one color the works well to highlight flakes, but a flat, green surface is uncommon during winter unless an object is brought outside.

UW starts new beef education program

The Wisconsin Beef Special Edition virtual series will begin Dec. 8.

It will start at 7 p.m. with a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session until 8:30 p.m. on Zoom. The featured topics will be estimating hay needs and budget decision tools for heifer enterprises.
