Seven wrestlers named all-conference

The Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights wrestling program had seven individuals earn spots on the all-Badger Small Conference team. In boys wrestling, Conway Knox was named to the first-team at 150 pounds. Max Schroeder (106 pounds), Matt Tesch (113), Lane Albers (190) and Logan McIntyre (215) were all named second-team all-conference. On the girls’ side, Margaret Barrett (107) and Naomi Bermudo (114) were named first-team all-conference. Schroeder finished second at the conference meet, falling to Reedsburg’s Braiden Hale-Toomey in the title match. Knox was fifth at the conference meet at 150 pounds, then finished fifth at regionals and narrowly missed a trip to sectionals. Schroeder was then first at regionals and second at sectionals and earned a trip to the WIAA Division 1 state meet. There, Schroeder went 2-2 and capped a terrific season that saw him go 41-7 overall. “I can’t be more proud of Max Schroeder,” Sauk/Heights coach Matt Gaffney said. “He put a lot of time in this sport. You can let it beat you up, if you let it. He’s a sophomore. I wasn’t even down here as a sophomore. His dad wasn’t down here as a sophomore. What he accomplished this year was impressive.”  Schroeder was also extremely pleased with his year, and is looking forward to 2026. “Next year, I need to keep working and keep working for this tournament,” Schroeder said of 2026. “I know what it’s like. It will be easier knowing what to expect and knowing that I can do it now.” Albers was fifth at the conference meet, second at regionals and third at sectionals. He narrowly missed out on a trip to state, as only the top two finishers at sectionals qualify. “I couldn’t be more proud of Lane. He left it all out on the mat,” Gaffney said of Albers, who finished the year with a 34-12 record. “Hopefully moving forward he can make those adjustments in the offseason, put some time in the weight room and some more time on the mat and hopefully next year at this time he has a different outcome.” McIntyre was third at the conference meet, fourth at regionals and fourth at sectionals. McIntyre finished the year with a 26-18 record. “It’s always sad to see a senior end their career, but that’s life,” Gaffney said of McIntyre. “I know Logan will do great things in the future.  “An extremely hard worker. He was a captain on the football team, captain on the wrestling team. Really going to miss Logan. Just a super good kid.” Tesch, a freshman, was sixth at the conference meet, but didn’t wrestle in the postseason. On the girls’ side, Barrett won the Badger Conference championship, was second at regionals and first at sectionals to earn a trip to state. Barrett then won a match at state, before dropping her final two matches. “Walking into the Kohl Center, I looked over at my coach and said ‘Wow!’ It was so cool,” Barrett said. “I had been in the Alliant Energy Center for youth wrestling, but it was completely different at the Kohl Center. I had never been to state to watch. It was a lot of fun to be there with my coaches and teammates.” Bermudo won a conference title at 114, was second at regionals and first at sectionals. Bermudo then went 1-2 at the state meet. “I told the girls, now you’ve got a year under your belt,” Gaffney said. “You know what it’s like. It’s all money in the bank, as (former) coach (Scott) Smith calls it. Any time you can get on the mat and wrestle, it’s money in the bank.”          All-Badger Small Boys Conference Wrestling          First Team 106: Braiden Hale-Toomey, Reedsburg 113: Treynor Curtin, Reedsburg 120: Kade Parrish, Reedsburg 126: Sam Timlin, Reedsburg 132: Peyton Oberg, Baraboo 138: Timmy Kruse, Mount Horeb 144: Hudson Jablonski, Reedsburg 150: Conway Knox, Sauk Prairie 157: Nolan Owen, Baraboo 165: Eli Maier, Mount Horeb-Barneveld 175: Eli Leonard, Mount Horeb-Barneveld 190: Eli Leonard, Mount Horeb-Barneveld 215: Gatlin Empey, Stoughton HWT: Landen Knuth, Reedsburg   WRESTLERS OF THE YEAR: Eli Leonard, Mount Horeb-Barneveld; Treynor Curtin, Reedsburg COACH OF THE YEAR:  Rob Bautch, Reedsburg     Second Team 106: Max Schroeder, Sauk Prairie 113: Matt Tesch, Sauk Prairie 120: Dezmen Severson, Baraboo 126: OPEN 132: Taven Johnson, Reedsburg 138: Payton Ferguson, Reedsburg 144: Gunder Nelson, Stoughton 150: Skyler Hanke, Reedsburg 157: Skyler Hanke, Reedsburg 165: Braxton Walter, Reedsburg 175: Bennett Rhodes, Reedsburg 190: Lane Albers, Sauk Prairie 215: Logan McIntyre, Sauk Prairie HWT: John Rogers, Baraboo         Honorable Mention Broc Mullenbach — Beaver Dam              All-Badger Small Conference Girls Wrestling           First Team 100: Dilynn Albrecht, Milton  107: Margaret Barrett, Sauk Prairie/Wis.
