Eagles hoping for postseason magic

Sauk Prairie boys basketball coach Sean McGann wasn’t pulling any punches. “We were very bad,” McGann said after the Eagles lost to visiting Madison Edgewood, 63-48, on Feb. 27. “The last two games we have not defended at all and it makes our offense more difficult because we are playing in the half court every possession.” Sauk Prairie finished the regular season 12-12 overall and 5-9 in the Badger Small Conference after its disappointing loss to Edgewood (6-18, 5-9). “Our biggest concern right now is that we can’t keep anyone in front of us,” McGann said. “We are playing 5-on-4 on nearly every possession, which is not sustainable for any period of time.” The Eagles also struggled shooting from close range, making just 4-of-15 shots from inside 5-feet. Edgewood, on the flip side, was 12-of-16 from inside 5-feet. “That was the big difference in that game,” McGann said. “They made their layups and we did not.” The Eagles are hoping for better things this postseason. Sauk Prairie is the No. 4 seed in its WIAA Division 2 Sectional and hosts either fifth-seeded Beaver Dam or 12th-seeded Milwaukee Marshall in a regional semifinal Friday at 7 p.m. If the Eagles win there — and the seeds hold — they’d travel to top-seeded Brookfield Central for a regional final Saturday at 7 p.m. “The only positive right now is that everyone is 0-0,” McGann said. “We have to learn a lot very quickly in the next week for us to have some postseason success.  “Beaver Dam — if they win — shoots the lights out. They have dudes who can just make plays. Every player in their rotation can get by somebody and make the right read. If we execute the way we have the past two games against a team like Beaver Dam, they could put up a lot of points. Gut check time.”
