Sauk Prairie’s boys roll past River Valley and Portage

The WIAA postseason seeds will be revealed Sunday. And last week, Sauk Prairie’s boys basketball team took a step towards ensuring it gets a respectable landing spot in the playoffs. The Eagles rolled past host River Valley, 70-45, on Feb. 10. Sauk Prairie then went to Portage and cruised to a 67-26 win on Feb. 13. The Eagles — who played last week without starting guard Otis Andres — are now 11-10 overall and 4-7 in the Badger Small Conference. “It definitely felt good to get back in the win column this week, especially without a starter,” Sauk Prairie coach Sean McGann said. Nic Keyser erupted for 21 points in the Eagles’ win over River Valley. Jake Buckles added 15 points, while Boden Breunig had eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Trent Backeberg had seven points and six rebounds, while Casey Brickl added six rebounds and four assists. The Eagles followed that with a comfortable win over Portage (2-17, 0-11). Sauk Prairie led, 30-17, at halftime, then outscored the Warriors, 37-9, in the second half. Keyser again led the way with 21 points, while Buckles added 11. “Nic Keyser carried us this week offensively along with Jake Buckles,” McGann said. “Nic was able to get loose in transition against both teams and Jake hit shot after shot for us from behind the arc. We got great contributions from everyone this week with everyone on the roster getting a bucket this past week.” • On deck: The Eagles were at Baraboo (13-8, 7-4) Tuesday, then host Stoughton (13-8, 7-4) Friday at 7:15 p.m. Overall, McGann is pleased where his team is headed with the postseason fast approaching. “I like the improvement we have seen over the past two weeks,” he said. “This week will be a big test, going against two teams who took it to us the first round. I’m excited to see how we have progressed since then as we get ready for postseason.”
