Marshall’s boys roll past Vanguards

The start was rough. And things didn’t get much better. Wisconsin Heights’ boys basketball team fell behind, 14-0, and never recovered during a 75-48 loss to Marshall on Jan. 24. Heights fell to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in the Capitol South Conference. Marshall improved to 11-3, 3-0. “They are definitely right there with Cambridge as one of the top teams in the Capitol South as well as all of Division 4,” Heights coach Nolan Krentz said of Marshall. “Despite the score, I did feel we competed hard and did a lot of good things.” Reed Adler led the Vanguards with 17 points, while Mike Fancsali had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Zach Sander had a career-high 10 points, while Brayden Van Riper added five assists, three blocks and two steals. Marshall raced to a 14-0 lead and Heights played uphill the rest of the night. “Their full court run-and-jump press and halfcourt 1-2-2 trap gave us fits throughout the game,” said Krentz, whose team had a season-high 28 turnovers as a team. “When we were able to break Marshall’s press, we did a good job getting quality shots.” Heights trailed, 41-23, at halftime and never made a dent in that deficit in the second half. The Vanguards did shoot 50.0% from the floor (21-of-42) and 57.9% in the second half (11-of-19). “As I have said in some of our earlier, tougher games this season, hopefully we learn from this game and can improve upon some things the next time we take the court as well as the next time we see Marshall,” Krentz said. • On deck: Heights hosted Parkview Tuesday, then is at New Glarus Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Vanguards are then at Belleville Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m., then head to Cambridge Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
