Eagles’ gymnastics team upended by Mount Horeb

Sauk Prairie’s girls gymnastics team has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years. But the Eagles found out last week they still have work to do before they catch juggernaut Mount Horeb. The Vikings downed the Eagles, 137.8750-131.10, in a Badger Conference meet on Jan. 14. Sauk Prairie’s McKenna Breunig was second in the all-around competition with a 35.350, while Claire Hartman was fourth (32.275). “McKenna put out another solid performance,” Eagles coach Justine Anderson said. “She is continuing to improve her vault score and she finally hit both of her handstands on bars, earning her highest bar score of the season.” Breunig was second on the vault with an 8.775, while Hartman was seventh (8.175), Addy Ranzenberger was eighth (8.0) and Kylee Ballweg was ninth (7.90). Breunig was second on the uneven bars (8.725), Hartman was seventh (8.250), Ballweg was eighth (8.050) and Lyla Annen was ninth (7.825). Breunig was second on the balance beam (9.175), Ballweg was sixth (8.125),  Lauren Uselman was eighth (7.50) and Hartman was ninth (7.375). And Breunig was fourth on the floor exercise (8.675), while Hartman was fifth (8.475), Annen was sixth (8.225) and Uselman was ninth (8.050). “Kylee also had a very solid evening, including earning her second 8.0 ever on bars and being one of two varsity girls to stick her beam routine for the night (Breunig was the other),” Anderson said. “Judging was tougher than we are used to seeing, but it is good to get fresh eyes and new feedback that we can take with us.” • Holmen Invite: The Eagles finished sixth among 14 teams last Saturday. The co-op team of Chippewa Falls/McDonell Central was first with 141.5750 points, while the Eagles were sixth at 134.60. Breunig was fourth in the all-around (35.70), second on bars (9.10) and fourth on the balance beam (9.30) and earned a spot on the podium for all three performances. “I am extremely proud of how well these girls held their own against some really tough D1 teams,” Anderson said.  “We scored our second highest team score of the season and placed above any teams that attended the meet from our conference and our sectional.”
