Eagles’ hockey team rolls off two wins

The Sauk Prairie co-op hockey team had a terrific week, winning a pair of games. The Eagles — who also have skaters from Mount Horeb, Wisconsin Heights, Barneveld and River Valley — defeated Sun Prairie, 2-1, in double overtime on Jan. 14. Sauk Prairie also rolled past the La Crosse Avalanche, 4-1, on Jan. 17. Sauk Prairie is now 8-10 overall and 4-4 in the Badger Conference. Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ week. • Sauk Prairie 2, Sun Prairie 1 (2 OTs) — Landon Froese scored an even strength goal 6 minutes, 46 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Eagles past the Cardinals. Corbin Damka was sensational in goal, with 35 saves and a .972 save percentage to earn the win for Sauk Prairie. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Gunnar Nachreiner scored a short-handed goal at 5:31. The Cardinals evened things up at 13:58 of the second period and it stayed that way until Froese’s thrilling game-winner. • Sauk Prairie 4, Avalanche 1 — The Eagles scored three third period goals to pull away in a game played at the Onalaska Omni Center. Landon Froese had a second period goal on assists from Gunnar Nachreiner and Josh Mast to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. After La Crosse’s co-op team tied the game midway through the second, it was all Eagles. Quinn Payne had what proved to be the game-winning goal on an assist from Mast just 1:13 into the second to give Sauk Prairie a 2-1 lead. Brock Hill had a short-handed goal at 6:26 that made it 3-1, then Ryan Rickard had a goal on assists from Lucas Rehlinger and Payne at 14:50 that finished the Avalanche off. Maddox Wood got the win in goal, finishing with 24 saves and a .960 save percentage. • On deck: The Eagles are at Stoughton Thursday at 7:15 p.m., then are off until Jan. 31 when they host Madison West at 7:30 p.m.
