Sauk Prairie girls roll to a pair of wins

Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team had a terrific week, rolling to a pair of wins. The Eagles routed McFarland, 51-18, on Jan. 7. Sauk Prairie also cruised past Reedsburg, 56-31, on Jan. 10. The Eagles improved to 6-5 overall, 3-3 in the Badger Small Conference. “It was a fun week with us playing hard,” Eagles coach Jacob Breunig said. • Sauk Prairie 51, McFarland 18 — Ava Brings had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Eagles to an easy win over the Spartans. Macee Gulden added eight points and eight rebounds, while Audrey Brickl had nine points. Mallory Hartwig had seven points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Kenzington Kleist had four points. “The girls played great defense allowing nine points each half,” Breunig said. “We still committed too many turnovers to be the team we want to be, but we were pleased with all the girls’ efforts and the teams intensity throughout the game.” Brickl hit three early 3-pointers as the Eagles built a comfortable lead. Sauk Prairie also forced 29 McFarland turnovers that led to 23 points. “A conference win is never easy so the staff was happy to see the girls play how they did,” Breunig said. • Sauk Prairie 56, Reedsburg 31 — Mallory Hartwig had 21 points, while Gracyn Meyer added 12 and the Eagles rolled past the Beavers. Ava Brings added 10 points Brooklyn Kaufman had six assists as Sauk Prairie defeated Reedsburg for the first time since 2014. “It was a nice win to get and one that I hope helps bring confidence to the team going forward,” Breunig said. “The bench was very loud and involved, and having a student section helped the girls with their energy. Youth Night made it a really fun environment and we hope to keep the gym rocking like that the rest of the season.” The Eagles shot 50.0% from the field and had a season-low in turnovers. “I was happy with how we attacked their zone and did not settle,” Breunig said. “We got really good ball movement and patience until we got a good shot.” • On deck: The Eagles hosted Baraboo Monday, then face Watertown Saturday at 5:40 p.m. at the Badger Conference Challenge at Oregon High School.
