Season ends for Eagles’ tennis team

Sauk Prairie’s girls tennis team sent two girls to the WIAA Division 1 Middleton Sectional on Oct. 9. Unfortunately for the Eagles, their seasons ended there. Sauk Prairie junior Addie Acker, its No. 1 singles player, lost in the first round of sectionals to Middleton’s Lydia Sabat, 6-0, 6-0. And Eagles’ No. 3 player, senior Stella Pacholke, dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Verona’s Nicole Repka. Acker advanced through subsectionals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Peyton Stelzer of Baraboo. “(Addie) did the necessary work in the regular season to obtain a No. 3 seed going into the tournament and faced a Baraboo opponent who she had beaten in a third set super-tiebreaker when they last played,” Eagles’ coach Heather Slosarek said. “Addy controlled the (subsectional) match, serving strongly and catching the lines beautifully with her groundstrokes.” Pacholke advanced through subsectionals thanks to a pair of wins. First, she defeated Camila Vazquez of Sparta, 6-1, 6-4. Then she downed Gigi Heiner of Baraboo, 6-3 , 6-0. “(Stella) has been one of the most consistent players we have had on the team, and she has demonstrated her ability to adapt to any opponent throughout the season,” Slosarek said. “After an easy first set, Stella found herself in a bit of a battle against her initial opponent from Sparta. She was able to advance by keeping a cool head and making shots when they counted.  “In her second match, she faced an opponent from Baraboo who she had a long three setter with in the regular season. This time, Stella found the right formula to get a 6-3, 6-0 win! She has earned her place in the sectional medal rounds! She has really stepped it up this season.” None of the other Eagles made it through subsectionals. “We were hopeful that some of our other players/teams could pull off an upset,” Slosarek said. “Overall, it was a good season for those who finished up.”
