Happy homecoming
There are Happy Homecomings.
Then there are homecomings where everyone is downright euphoric.
Wisconsin Heights’ football team experienced the latter last Friday.
Cody Blicharz dominated on offense, John Reader and Damien Henning were sensational on defense and the Vanguards routed Kickapoo/La Farge, 50-0.
Heights improved to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ridge & Valley-8 Conference.
“The guys went out and executed like they should have,” Heights coach Connor Herrling said. “There were no mental errors or physical errors. We played our style of football.”
There were many heroes for the Vanguards on this enjoyable evening.
Blicharz carried the ball 19 times for 227 yards and five touchdowns — an average of 12.0 yards per carry. The Vanguards’ offensive line was also terrific paving the way for Blicharz.
“Big shout out to the offensive line,” Herrling said. “They are the heart and soul of this team.”
Reader led a dominant defensive effort with 14 tackles, two sacks and an interception. Damien Henning added 10 tackles and Luke Herrling had eight tackles.
Another highlight was freshman quarterback Jaden Starcer throwing a 52 yard touchdown after the reserves entered the game.
“Everyone was on top of it,” Herrling said. “From the sideline being super loud, to everyone that went in to put on a show.
“Everyone saw the field Friday night, it made me happy to get everyone in. It was great to see them go and still shut their offense out and to still score on them. That means they have been paying attention and that they want it just as bad.”
It all added up to a huge win on a night Wisconsin Heights High School was rocking.
“Big shout out to our fans and the student section,” Herrling said. “I’ve never seen that stadium that slammed before. It was great to see and hear.
“We have true dedicated fans, that love the sport of football. From my behalf and the teams we thank you.
“There wasn’t a dull moment for this game. There never has been a dull moment with this team, they keep you on your toes and I love every second of it.”
