Wisconsin Heights spikers drop 6 of 7

Wisconsin Heights’ girls volleyball team is off to a rough start and dropped six of seven matches in the past two weeks.
Here’s a recap of those matches.
• Marshall 3, Wisconsin Heights 0 — The Cardinals cruised past the Vanguards, 25-10, 25-11, 25-14, on Sept. 12.
Izzy Sutherland and Lydia Crowe both had two kills, while Sonja Severson had six digs. Addie Duhr had two kills and one block, Haydan Louis added four assists and two aces, while Maya Luko had six digs.
“Marshall is a very tough competitive team with a lot of weapons in the front row,” Doescher said. “We struggled with blocking and defense to stop their offense, and we had a hard time passing well on serve receive, which took us out of any rhythm for our own offense.
“I’m definitely proud of our girls for sticking together as a team. They have all been working hard at keeping the ‘We not Me’ mentality and they showed that against Marshall. Even through the struggles during that match, they had some long rallies where they showed determination, and they stayed positive and together as a team unit.”
• Belleville 3, Wisconsin Heights 0 — The Wildcats downed the Vanguards, 25-16, 25-13, 25-20, on Sept. 10.
Izzy Sutherland and Lydia Crowe both had three kills, while Mia Blicharz had eight assists and six digs. Sonja Severson added 11 digs, Maya Luko had eight digs and two aces, and Lorelai Sutherland had two aces.
“At Belleville we struggled to find a rhythm and play as a team,” Doescher said. “Belleville had several great hitters who dominated over our blocking and defense. Offensively, we weren’t able to respond with enough effective attacks to score points or push them out of system.”
MIDDLETON
TOURNAMENT
The Vanguards went 1-3 at the Middleton Tournament on Sept. 7.
Middleton downed Heights, 25-5, 22-25, 15-5, then Oregon bested the Vanguards, 25-20, 25-9. Heights responded with a 25-21, 25-21 win over Madison East, but Baraboo then toppled the Vanguards, 25-14, 25-17.
Sonja Severson had 14 kills, two blocks and 25 digs on the day, while Izzy Sutherland added 10 kills. Lydia Crowe had six kills and Haydan Louis added 28 assists
• Waterloo 3, Wisconsin Heights 1 — The host Pirates downed the Vanguards, 26-24, 13-25, 29-27, 25-13, on Sept. 5.
Izzy Sutherland had nine kills and three blocks for the Vanguards, while Sonja Severson added eight kills and 23 digs.
Lydia Crowe had six kills and four aces, while Vanessa Wagner added 21 digs.
Haydan Louis chipped in with 18 assists and three aces, while Maya Luko had four aces.
“We had a tough opening conference match against Waterloo,” Heights coach Katie Doescher said. “We showed resilience through some hard fought sets and coming back to take set 2, but ultimately gave up too many points from our own errors.”
