Soccer Eagles making strides

Sauk Prairie’s boys soccer team dropped two of three games last week. Here’s a recap of the Eagles week: Monona Grove 1, Sauk Prairie 0 — The Eagles couldn’t find the back of the net, but head coach Drew Kornish was encouraged with what he saw. “In the early stages of this season, we are looking at growth,” Kornish said. “For a program with only one senior, we understand that these learning opportunities are going to be imperative for us to be able to reach our end goals. “Overall I felt like we played all right and came up short with the final product.” Eagles keeper Ghiovanny Puga had five saves. Sauk Prairie 2, Stoughton 0 — Lupe Alcantar Ramirez and Gio Garcia Martinez both had goals as the Eagles posted a big win over the Vikings. Lincoln Ganzer and Angel Ibarra both added assists. Puga added three saves. “A really positive game for us and our first conference win,” Kornish said. “Again, slightly lacking in the final product, but overall a really good performance.” Totino Grace (Minn.)  4, Sauk Prairie 0 — Puga had five saves, but the Eagles fell to a high-level team from Minnesota. Despite the loss, Kornish felt extremely good about how his team performed. “Out of the three games we played in the four days, I had the most positives to take away from this one,” he said. “I felt as though we played a really good side out of the Twin Cities pretty competitively, especially in the first half. “With this group of players, there certainly are no moral victories, but as a group that is learning and growing, this game gave us the most opportunity to do that. The real test will be how we respond to this week and whether can we apply the takeaways in a really big week here with two sectional games and another against a very quality Wisconsin Dells program.”
