Baseball Vanguards fall twice to Belleville

Wisconsin Heights’ baseball team dropped a pair of games to Belleville last week. The Wildcats defeated the Vanguards, 2-1, on May 14 and 15-5 on May 16. Heights fell to 2-17 on the season and is now 0-10 in the Capitol South Conference. Here’s a recap of Heights’ week: • Belleville 2, Wisconsin Heights 1 — The Vanguards struck out 13 times against Belleville hurler Austin McKinley and dropped a tight contest to the host Wildcats. Reed Adler threw extremely well for Heights, allowing just three hits and one earned run in six innings. Adler also struck out four, walked one and threw strikes on 58 of his 85 pitches (68.2%). Quinn Payne and Brayden VanRiper both had two hits for the Vanguards. • Belleville 15, Wisconsin Heights 5 — Brayden VanRiper had a double and two RBI, but it wasn’t enough for the host Vanguards. “We played a little sloppy in this one as Belleville took advantage of nine unearned runs,” Heights manager Ted Severson said. River Lubchansky and Lukas Lemke both added two hits for the Vanguards, as well. Belleville pounded out 14 hits against Heights pitchers Quinn Payne and Lubchansky. The Wildcats also scored three runs, or more, in four different innings. • On deck: The Vanguards were at Belleville Monday, then begin the postseason Thursday.   GOLF Wisconsin Heights’ boys golfers finished in eighth place at the Capitol South Conference meet on May 14. Cambridge won the meet with a 316 team score, 30 shots better than runner-up New Glarus (346). Heights finished with a 397. Junior Theo Glemain led the Vanguards with a 96 that included four pars. Sophomore Greyden Schomber shot a 98 in which he had three pars, while junior Luke Herrling shot a 101 and junior Logan Duhr carded a 102. Heights then headed to the WIAA Division 3 Mineral Point Regional on Tuesday. Joining the Vanguards at regionals were Argyle/Pecatonica, Berneveld, Darlington, Fennimore, Iowa-Grant, Lancaster, Mineral Point and Parkview. The top four teams at regionals advanced to the Markesan Sectional, which will be held on May 29 at Golf Courses at Lawsonia.
