Baseball Vanguards top Monticello/Albany

Wisconsin Heights’ baseball team defeated Monticello/Albany, 2-0, on April 29. The Vanguards then dropped a 9-7 decision to Marshall on April 30 and a 7-2 game to Marshall on May 1.
Heights is now 2-12 on the year and 0-7 in the Capitol South Conference.
Here’s a recap of the Vanguards’ week.
• Wisconsin Heights 2, Monticello/Albany 0 — Brayden VanRiper was spectacular on the mound, scattering five hits and throwing a complete game shutout to power the Vanguards.
Van Riper finished with just 94 pitches in his stellar outing.
Reed Adler went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI single. Quinn Payne and Charlie Reader both went 2-for-3, while Fin Hinderman added an RBI single.
• Marshall 9, Wisconsin Heights 7 — Reed Adler went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in a losing effort.
Charlie Reader had two RBIs, while River Lubchansky, Fin Hinderman and Nolan Keith each had an RBI of their own.
• Marshall 7, Wisconsin Heights 2 — Charlie Reader went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a losing effort.
“We had our chances to score, but a line drive out, double play to end the game has been the luck we’ve had to date,” Heights manager Ted Severson said. “Our players work hard and have great attitudes and hopefully down the stretch run we’ll get some bounces to go our way.”
• On deck: The Vanguards hosted Pecatonica Tuesday and traveled to Waterloo Wednesday. Heights is at Lake Mills Thursday at 5 p.m., then is off until it heads to Belleville on May 14 at 5 p.m.
