Tennis Eagles keep making strides

Sauk Prairie’s boys tennis team finished in eighth place at the Stoughton Invite last Saturday. There was a lot for the Eagles to feel good about, though. “We had five of our seven positions play in at least one tiebreak throughout the day, and came home with four individual wins,” Sauk Prairie coach Morgan Lee said.  Sauk Prairie’s top doubles team of Ayden Wildman and Sebastian Gavol had two wins on the day. Charlie Endres notched a win at No. 2 singles, while the Eagles’ No. 3 doubles team Wyatt Frey and Jake Haake also earned a win. “Endres played a very smart game against his opponent to win his final match,” Lee said. “And Haake and Frey did a great job at the net to claim their victory as well.” DeForest won the team title with 16 points, while Oregon was second with 15. The Crusaders won all seven flights in straight sets on April 29 at Quann Park. The Eagles’ match against the Beavers on April 30 was closer. Gavin Krueger hung tough at No. 4 singles before dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Reedsburg’s Casey Weis. “Gavin Krueger put up a great fight at No. 4 singles,” Lee said. “I think if the two played again, Gavin could come out on top.” And Sauk Prairie’s top doubles team of Ayden Wildman and Sebastian Gavol fell in three sets to Reedsburg’s Jordan Matyas and Simon Wenninger, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-4. “No. 1 doubles had a very slow start, which had them lose the first set and get down 0-3 in the second set,” Lee said. “They rallied to win the set in a tiebreak, but ultimately lost in the match tiebreak. If we could have a different start this match outcome could have a different story.
