Girls track team wins Baraboo Relays

It was rainy, windy and cold last Friday. But no one on Sauk Prairie’s girls track and field team seemed to mind. The Eagles finished first at the Baraboo Relays, winning the team title for a second straight year. Sauk Prairie’s boys were fourth. “We had many medal winning relays and some in the individual events,” Eagles coach Andy Sherman said. “I am very proud of how this team accepts all that we cannot control and simply gets to work without complaining. That is the true sign of a collective group of athletes that does their best for our team.” Here’s a list of the Eagles’ top finishers:            GIRLS • MariElla Viola was first in the 100-meter dash. • Sauk Prairie’s 800-meter relay team of Ayla Sorg, Viola, Ella Weigel and Ziah Been was first. • The Eagles’ 400-meter relay team of Sorg, Viola, Weigel and Been was first. • Sauk Prairie’s 1,600-meter relay team of Sorg, Charlotte Gregg, Evelyn Bahe and Been was first. • The Eagles’ 2-2-4-8 relay team of Kaya Howard, Kassie Gavol, Bahe and Charlotte Gregg was first. • Sauk Prairie’s triple jump relay team of Howard, Ava Sandeman, Been was first. • The Eagles’ high jump relay team of Sydney Moore, Ella Logterman and Leah Engelby was second. • CJ Gregg was second in the 3,200 meter run. • The Eagles’ 3,200-meter relay team of Aaliyah Bermudo, Clarissa Brickl, Kylie Hutchins and CJ Gregg was third. • Sauk Prairie’s distance medley team of Lainey Dillon, Gavol, Hutchins, Brickl was third.   BOYS • Wyatt Gibbs was second in the 100-meter dash. • Sauk Prairie’s 800-meter relay team of Wyatt Gibbs, Landon Schultz, John Fabian and Michael Blau was second. • The Eagles’ 400-meter relay team of Gibbs, Schultz, Fabian, Blau was also second. • Sauk Prairie’s high jump relay team of Gibbs, Blau and Drew Hicken was second.     SAUK PRAIRIE               QUAD Sauk Prairie’s girls were second out of four teams and the boys were third on April 23. “This was our first opportunity to see our whole team compete this season,” Sherman said. “It is always great to see those athletes get into their first competition after all of the work they have done to reach this point.  “Tuesday night meets give us the chance to try some things out but also do our best to not overwork anyone.” The Eagles’ top performances included:   GIRLS • MariElla Viola won the 100-meter and 200-meter run.  “She continues to run very well and is ahead of where she was at this time last year,” Sherman said of Viola.  • Evelyn Bahe and Charlotte Gregg went 1-2 in the 400-meter run. “It’s the first time either of them have raced that distance,” Sherman said.  • The Eagles’ 1,600-meter relay team of Ayla Sorg, Bahe, Charlotte Gregg and Lexi Been finished first with a time of 4:23. “This group could be very important to us as we move forward,” Sherman said.  • Lexi Been won the triple jump and Ava Sandeman was second in the event.  • Claire Hartman was second in the 300-meter hurdles. • Catherine Gregg and Lainey were second and third, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run. • Hartman was third in the pole vault.   BOYS • John Fabian won the long jump and placed fourth in the triple jump. • Wyatt Gibbs was second in the 100-meter dash. • Landon Schultz was second in the 400-meter run, setting a new PR.  • The Eagles’ 1,600-meter relay team was second. • Drew Hicken was second in the high jump. • Trent Backeberg was third in the 110 high hurdles and third in the triple jump. • Jacob Sherman was third in the shot put. • The Eagles’ 3,200-meter relay team was third.   WAUNAKEE FRESHMAN/SOPHOMORE MEET Sauk Prairie’s boys were third and its girls were eighth in a meet held April 25. “In a limited number of events entered, the boys ended up third and the six girls who competed were eighth overall,” Sherman said. The Eagles’ top performances included:   BOYS • Caleb Breunig won the triple jump. • Taylen Young won the discus and Simon Homp was third.  • Young was also 2nd in the shot put and Homp was fifth. • Drew Hicken was second in the high jump.  • Gavin Carncross was second in both the 800- and 1,600-meter run.    GIRLS • Maggie Barrett was second in the 300-meter hurdles.  • Kylie Hutchins was sixth in the 1,600-meter run and Barrett was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.
