Sauk Prairie golfers keep on rolling

The beat goes on. Sauk Prairie’s terrific boys golf team continued the sizzling start to their season last week. The Eagles won the Badger Small Conference Mini-Meet at Lake Wisconsin Country Club on April 16. Sauk Prairie then finished fourth at the 24-team Reedsburg Invite last Friday. Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ week: • Badger Small Conference mini-meet — Graysen Dunn and Colin Harrington both carded 85s as Sauk Prairie won a conference meet.  The Eagles finished with 343 team score to outdistance runner-up Stoughton (358) and everyone else. “Fast greens, a few tough pins and very windy conditions made for difficult scoring conditions for our mini-meet,” Sauk Prairie coach Shane Frey said. “I was really proud of how the guys battled throughout the day.   “We are in a tight race for the conference title and every stroke will matter in the end. They all had those holes that were really frustrating and could have easily derailed their rounds. They just kept grinding and at the end of day put up some really good scores on a tough scoring day.” Gavin Goetsch added an 86 for Sauk Prairie, while Garret Mittelstaedt shot an 87. “They all hung in there, but I was really proud of our two seniors — Garret Mittelstaedt and Colin Harrington. Garret had a rough start to his round and ended up with a 51 on his first nine holes. He could have easily mailed it in and gave up on the round, but he kept battling and ended up with an outstanding back score of 36. He knows how important he will be to our run at a conference title and it was great to see him get it going on the back nine. Colin also had a really good day, finishing with an 85. He just kept working hard and I loved how strong he was on his final four or five holes. We often talk about how important it is to finish rounds strong and Colin did exactly that.” • Reedsburg Invite — The Eagles finished fourth at the stellar tournament played at Reedsburg Country Club. Holmen won the event with a 318, while the Eagles shot a 338. “I always love getting our guys on at Reedsburg Country Club,” Frey said. “It is a great course and is always in outstanding condition. The guys played well and hung in there when things started to go south at times.”  Graysen Dunn led the Eagles with an 82, while Gavin Goetsch shot an 83. Gavin Falde added an 85 and Garret Mittelstaedt carded an 88. “Graysen Dunn had a really solid round,” Frey said. “He was really striking the ball well and had a lot of pars and bogeys on his card, which was great for the tough conditions we were facing.   “I was also really proud of how he bounced back from his worst hole of the day with a par on the hole after.  That type of ability to bounce back after a bad hole is huge and something that we as a team need to try to be more consistent with.   “Gavin Goetsch and Gavin Falde also played really consistent golf and finished with very good scores. They did a great job of keeping the big numbers off the card.”
