Baseball Vanguards notch first win

Wisconsin Heights’ baseball team got off to a rough start, dropping their first four games of the season. The Vanguards broke into the win column on April 11, though, defeating Poynette, 10-2. Heights is now 1-4 on the young season. Here’s a recap of the Vanguards’ past week: • Wisconsin Heights 10, Poynette 2 — Fin Hinderman threw five shutout innings and belted a grand slam home run to power the Vanguards to their first win of the year. Hinderman struck out four, walked just one and allowed three hits. Hinderman also ripped a fourth inning grand slam and finished the day with five RBI. Hinderman finished his big day going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Reed Adler also went 3-for-3 with three doubles. He also scored three runs, had two RBI, stole a base and drew a walk. Quinn Payne went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ryan Van Riper went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI single, a stolen base and a run scored. Nolan Keith had an RBI single and River Lubchansky went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. “As a team we continue to get better every day,” Heights manager Ted Severson said. “We started the season a little sloppy in the field, but we have since ironed things out and I can’t wait to watch and help this team grow and develop throughout the season. “We might be young, but we are strong and talented with five juniors, five sophomores and five freshmen — 15 players that show up each and every day with a great hard-working, never-give-up positive attitude.” • Fennimore 10, Vanguards 7 — Heights held a 10-9 lead in total hits, but gave up 10 walks in the loss. “That turned out to be the difference,” Severson said. Quinn Payne went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Vanguards’ offense, while Zac Sander went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Reed Adler went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Nolan Keith added a two-run single and River Lubchansky went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
