Eagles’ boys earn seventh seed

Bring on the postseason. Sauk Prairie’s boys basketball team received the No. 7 seed in its half of the sectional on Sunday. The Eagles open the postseason by hosting 10th-seeded Portage in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game travels to second-seeded Beaver Dam for a regional semifinal on March 1 at 7 p.m. The regional finals are March 2. “I like our draw and we are excited to see what happens,” Sauk Prairie coach Sean McGann said. “We have placed very little weight into what seed we get.  “We know at the end of the day, you will play good teams and you need to play well to win. We see it every March, but truly anyone can win any given game in the postseason. It is the best time of the year!” The Eagles are coming off a week in which they dropped a pair of games and fell to 11-12 overall and 7-6 in the Badger Small Conference. Baraboo defeated Sauk Prairie, 68-53, on Feb. 13, then Stoughton downed the Eagles, 66-56, on Feb. 16. “Obviously, it is disappointing that we dropped both games last week, but sometimes you need to have something like this happen to grab your attention,” McGann said. “We lost to two quality teams, so it is not like we are in panic mode, but there is a sense of urgency to get things corrected as we enter the postseason.” Baraboo senior post Ross Liegel had 30 points and 12 rebounds in the Thunderbirds’ win over Sauk Prairie. Stoughton then got 23 points from senior guard Sawyer Schipper and 13 from senior guard Ty Fernholz in the Vikings’ win over the Eagles. The Eagles will now turn their attention to the postseason, where they’ve gone 2-0 against Portage. Sauk Prairie defeated the host Warriors, 49-32, on Dec. 12. The Eagles then rolled to a 72-52 win over visiting Portage on Feb. 9. If the Eagles advance to a matchup against Beaver Dam, there will be some familiarity. Those teams met on Jan. 20 in the Badger Challenge, where the Beavers notched a 77-59 win.
