Eagles’ swimmers rout Beaver Dam

It was the perfect night for seniors Summer Acker, Abbey McCumber, Alexa Judd, Giulia Brickl, Isabel Menendez and Patricia Silva to finish off their home careers. Sauk Prairie won five individual events and claimed titles in two of the three relays as the Eagles dominated Beaver Dam, 113-57, in a Badger North Conference dual meet on ‘Senior Night’ on Oct. 15. Judd won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 25.47 seconds and swam on the winning ‘A’ 200 freestyle relay – which included sophomore Kassandra Miller, junior Lauryn Drager and sophomore Amelia Hunter and finished in 1:47.31. Judd was also second in the 100 butterfly and swam on the runner-up ‘B’ 200 medley relay. Acker won the 500 freestyle (6:03.88) and swam on the runner-up ‘B’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays and on the third-place ‘B’ 200 freestyle relay. “Alexa had a really good meet, swimming a season-best in all of her races,” Sauk Prairie coach Melani Guentherman said. “It’s super promising to see where she is at right now. It was fun. Summer had a great 500, her season-best. “Abbey was in some off-events, not her normal ones, but she had great times. She swam the 100 free and had her season-best time in that.” McCumber was also on the runner-up ‘A’ 200 medley relay that included seniors Acker, Giulia Brickl and Judd. “I thought it’d be fun,” Guentherman said of the all-senior relay. “We had four girls who’d swum together all four years. They were second but they raced great. It was a special moment for them. “Giulia’s time (1:14.66) in the breaststroke was spot on her best time all season. She didn’t get the win but took it out and had an awesome swim.” The meet also marked the return of junior Cora Dunnum, who had been out all season with a shoulder injury. “We were super psyched to have her back,” Guentherman said. “She swam her first freestyle race on the ‘C’ medley relay and had an outstanding swim. “She’s been at practice and kicking all season. It’s nice to get her back. She was on all three of our state relays, including the 200 freestyle that was fourth. It’s one meet at a time to see how she responds.” Other winners for the Eagles included Miller in the 200 freestyle (2:04.87) and 100 backstroke (1:05.23); freshman Riley Talmage in the 50 freestyle (:27.37); and the 400 freestyle ‘A’ relay of Miller, Talmage, Drager and sophomore Ashley Pape (4:00.77). • Fort Atkinson Invitational — Sauk Prairie capped off the week with fifth-place finish out of nine teams last Saturday. DeForest won the meet with 372 points with Monroe/New Glarus taking second with 322. Sauk Prairie finished with 250 points. The top six relays and individuals earned medals with the Eagles reaching the podium in seven of the 11 events. “All three of our relays were top six, and Cora (Dunnum), Kas (Miller) and Alexa (Judd) won individual medals,” Guentherman said. “The competition was outstanding.” Kassandra Miller led the Eagles with a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle and a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley. She also swam on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays that were fourth. “She had a great race in the 500 free,” Guentherman said of Miller. “It was her season-best by a second. It was a fun race to watch. She was in one of the outside lanes and came back and got second after being in fourth place after 300.” Alexa Judd also had an outstanding meet, finishing third in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 50 freestyle as well as swimming on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. “It was our first invite in a while, and it was a nice opportunity to compete over a period of three hours instead of swimming four races in one hour,” Guentherman said. “The girls were enjoying swimming a little more rested for their races even though we’re at the peak of our training and they are very, very beat down. They at least got to recover in between their races.” Cora Dunnum continued her comeback from a shoulder injury and placed sixth in both the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay. “She swam two races and was spot on in both of them,” Guentherman said of Dunnum. “She’s not able to take a full load yet, and I don’t know if she will be able to this season.
