Heights earns No. 3 seed

The Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld boys’ soccer team received the No. 3 seed for the playoffs, which start on Oct. 24. The Vanguards will take on the winner of the Prairie Du Chien/Dodgeland Hustisford play-in match. “We have a good path through the playoffs,” Vanguards coach Bartlett Holmes said. “When our team shows up ready to play, we are dangerous. “It will be about showing up and beating teams that we lost to in the regular season. If the boys show up ready to play the full 90 minutes, I like our chances.” The Vanguards proved last week they can play with anybody when they beat Capitol Conference leader Sugar River, 2-0. In the 42nd minute, freshman Sam King broke through for a score. “Our defense stayed organized,” Holmes said. “We were able to hold them off. Trevor (Dimpfl) was in control in the net. Our offense kept pushing.” In the second half, the pressure continued. At the 55-minute mark, Heights extended its lead to 2-0 when Gavin Childs fed Caeben Schomber for a goal. “Gavin’s pass to Caeben was beautiful,” Holmes said. “And Caeben had a great shot. Even without scoring, Gavin was a force up front keeping their defense on their heels.” Heights/Barneveld also played to a 2-2 tie against Wisconsin Dells. The tie took the Vanguards out of the running for the conference title. The small field and rain made passing difficult. The Vanguards scored in the opening minutes, but Dells answered immediately when Dimpfl slipped in the net. Early in the second half, Braydan Cymbalak’s free kick sailed right into the net. Dells tied it up by converting a penalty kick awarded for a hand ball in the box. “We didn’t play well,” said a disappointed Holmes.
