Girls basketball looks to get competitive this year

The River Valley High School varsity basketball team will be led by head coach Brent Johnson, who will be assisted by Eric Briehl. This is Johnson’s fifth year as head coach and 22nd year coaching overall. Last year’s record for the Hawks was 3-20, with the girls losing in the first round of regionals to Westby.  Tienna Gruber and Ally Hoffman were lost to graduation this past year. Emily Esser, Brooke Anderson, Ava Liegel, and Charlotte Ferstl are all returning starters for the Hawks. Senior Esser leads the Blackhawks in games started and is the returning leader in assists. Sophomore Ferstl was the second on the team in scoring and rebounding. Sophomore Anderson led the team in made three point shots and is the returning leader in steals.  “River Valley will be looking to get competitive in the ultra-talented SWC conference,” said coach Johnson when asked about the outlook of the season. “If the young players can take the next step and jell with the seniors on the team, River Valley will be able to win games in the SWC.” The SWC boasts some of the top talent in the state, including state qualifier Platteville.   A photo of the girls basketball team was not available.
