Dear editor, Amazing turnout for the Red Cross Blood Drive in Plain on April 26. Our 46 donors have the possibility of saving 138 lives!  Thank you all so much.  Thanks to the Home News and WRCO for getting the word out.  Thanks also to my family who were there for the set up and take down.  Our next blood drive at the Legion in Plain is scheduled for June 28.  Mark your calendars.   Kathy Harrington Red Cross Blood Drive coordinator Plain   Dear editor, Having heard that getting the covid vaccine was a complicated technical mess, I’d been putting off the whole project.  But then I saw the front page article in a recent Home News reporting that the Spring Green EMS was doing it, so it seemed time to deal with it.  If it was going to be aggravating, at least it would be local, right? Surprise, surprise!  Setting the appointment was utterly simple, timing was quick, shot was painless, staff was friendly, and I’m half-way to being way, way safer! I used the website, but am betting the phone line is just as smooth. Peggy Peckham Arena   Dear editor, The Spring Green, Plain and Arena police departments will join thousands of law enforcement agencies for this year’s Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign, one of the nation’s most important highway safety efforts. From May 24 through June 6, our local departments will join officers statewide and nationwide, to patrol for longer hours to reinforce one safety message – buckle up.  Currently, 89 percent of Wisconsin motorists wear safety belts. The 11 percent who fail to buckle up accounted for 43 percent of all the drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes in 2020. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign will be nighttime enforcement. Wisconsin’s primary seat belt law, in place since 2009, allows police officers to stop and cite motorists for failing to wear a seat belt. Drivers can also be cited for every unbuckled passenger in their vehicle and penalties are even higher for transporting unrestrained children. Failure to fasten a seat belt is among the most common traffic violations in Wisconsin, resulting in more than 27,000 traffic convictions last year. Wearing a seat belt is not only the law, but it can also save your life. If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up every trip, no matter how long.
