Dear editor, Open letter to Leah Spicer: With great interest, I read your candidacy announcement in the June 22 Home News. I commend you for your civic participation. This area is fortunate to have competent people like you, Todd Novak and Howard Marklein willing to be our representatives. The degree of partisanship shown by you in your opening salvo was surprising to me. Clearly showing your stripes could be a wise move by you because of the way the political climate has trended in recent years in District 51. Or not. Anyway, the “beef” that you have with your opponent is that “he doesn’t stand up to his party.” Personally, I don’t think that that should be a litmus test for any candidate in any party but, since you do, I’m going to ask you a question. You can’t deny that several elected representatives in the party of your choice have advocated for the defunding of police. Will you “stand up” to that element of your party, or are you “good” with the advocacy? I’m asking for either a “yes” or “no” answer and expecting (and hoping) that you will elaborate on that one word answer. Thank you, in advance. Respectfully, Bill Carver Spring Green   Dear editor, A hearty thank you for all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the Spring Green Arts & Crafts Fair such a great success. As the foundation for summer activities in Spring Green safely returned after a COVID-imposed hiatus, we were able to breathe a sigh of relief as we welcomed back all the artists, musicians, concession workers, and visitors. It was also a wonderful opportunity to renew friendships and community ties after a long two years of solitude. While it is still important to remain vigilant around the virus, this return to normality was a reminder of what we can achieve when we cooperate and take care of each other.
