She was born on May 23, 1936 in the family home in Rural Reedsburg, WI, the daughter of John D. and Lauretta (Cutsforth) Fuller. Merna grew up in rural Reedsburg, the youngest of 12 children.

He was born on July 4, 1939 in a log cabin, which is now under where Lake Redstone is located in Sauk County, the son of Charles and Clara (Manglos) Geitz.
