This week, I am beset by gremlins from the technological arena. So my message to you will be short this week. Every year, we wish for peace on Earth. Never have we needed it more than we do right now. So let's repeat that wish once again and hope that this year we can really make it happen.
Just two years since a record 14.3 inches of rain fell on Mazomanie, forcing me and my neighbors from our inundated homes, the Governor’s Taskforce on Climate Change has released a report with ideas for how Wisconsin can better prepare for extreme weather linked to climate change.
A majority of newspaper respondents to an online poll said their holiday spending was the same as last year despite coronavirus.
According to the poll, 56 percent of respondents said there wasn’t any change in their holiday spending. Thirty-eight percent said they’d spend less, and six percent said they’d spend more money.
If the Christmas season had a theme song, it would probably sound less like “Silent Night” and more like “Flight of the Bumblebee.” There’s shopping and cooking to do, wrapping to finish, decorating to complete. We’re making arrangements with family and friends and/or organizing church services.
Saturday afternoon, Dec. 19, I was taken aback by something unexpected. I heard fire trucks and ambulances with sirens blaring and horns honking. I looked out my upstairs office window and could see across the highway to Dewey Avenue. There went one, two, three and many more – lights flashing wildly as they headed past Reedsburg Medical Center.
As we have all learned to live in this new world of social distancing and isolating ourselves, many of us are experiencing what is a harsh reality for so many older people: Loneliness. It doesn’t feel good and it’s bad for our health.
Hang on! The light will come back. It will be slow, but it will be steady. There is more darkness ahead, but a little less than what lies behind us. The Winter Solstice has been a time of celebration for people since the dawn of time.
