Have you checked the antifreeze in the evergreen ferns in the woods or foundation plantings? ‘Tis the week before winter and some ferns are still green. A few local ferns do retain their leaves (fronds) throughout a year. They are able to do this by producing sugar-like antifreeze that protects the cells from freezing temperatures.
