Swimmers shine at state

WAUKESHA — It had been more than a decade since the Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights swimmers notched a top-five finish at state. That drought ended last Friday when the Eagles finished fourth at the WIAA Division 2 state meet held at Waukesha South High School.

Eagles’ boys notch top seed

Sean McGann knows there are no guarantees. No promises. But McGann, Sauk Prairie’s boys basketball coach, likes the position his Eagles are in for the postseason. Sauk Prairie earned the No. 1 seed in its six-team WIAA Division 2 postseason pod. Lodi is the No. 2 seed, followed by McFarland, Madison Edgewood, Mount Horeb and Platteville.

Hoping for a playoff run

Amazingly, the postseason in already here. And perhaps Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team has ironed out some of the kinks that plagued them in recent weeks. The Eagles snapped a five-game losing streak with a pair of wins last week. Sauk Prairie defeated host Baraboo, 62-50, on Feb. 2. The Eagles then edged visiting DeForest, 43-42, on Feb. 5.

Eagles wrestlers fall short of state

Sauk Prairie’s four remaining boys wrestlers gave a valiant effort at the WIAA Division 1 Mukwonago Sectional last Saturday. The four Eagles fell just short of state, though. Carson Saladis, a 132-pounder, and heavyweight Nolan Vils both finished in fourth place. Colton Uselman (132) and Luis Elizondo (145) failed to win a match.

Gymnasts have record night

It was a record-setting night for Sauk Prairie’s girls gymnastics team on Feb. 3. Even more exciting was it came in a win. The Eagles downed Reedsburg, 128.450-123.30 in a dual meet.  “They looked like they deserved to break the record with so many more hit routines,” Sauk Prairie coach Justine Anderson said.

Hockey co-op wins regional

For one night, Hakon Peterson played hero. And boy, was it enjoyable for both Peterson and Sauk Prairie’s co-op hockey team. Peterson, a forward from Mount Horeb, scored the game-winning goal with just more than two minutes left and lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Reedsburg’s co-op team in a WIAA Division 1 regional final last Friday.

Heights girls hope to make playoff noise

They haven’t won a game in three weeks.  They’ve lost five in a row — with four coming by double digits. But Wisconsin Heights’ girls basketball team still believes it can cause some havoc this postseason.

Jacob Manning to represent Ithaca/Weston at WIAA State Wrestling Tournament

For the first time in his career, Jacob Manning will compete in the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament as the 170-pounder for the Ithaca/Weston co-op placed second to advance from Saturday’s Mineral Point Sectional Meet in D-3 action.
