STANEK COLUMN: Remember why veterans exist

One of my favorite shows is “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and one of my favorite episodes is “The Siege of AR-558.” It depicts brutal, bloody warfare. At the end, new soldiers arrive, and one of the characters remarks about them being “so young.” Capt. Benjamin Sisko replies, “Not for long.”

Nature and Society, Nov. 13, 2025

A big red dog came to call, and it wasn't Clifford! I looked out the window when I heard a chicken squawk and I saw a big red dog trotting through the yard. My first thought was for the chickens, who were loose outside, so I went to shoo the dog off.

Letter: Protests prove Trump is no king

Debi Morton in her October 23 letter says October 18 was a "Great day for No Kings" in Dodgeville.

What was so great about this childish event except that it only gave more exposure to those unhinged people who hate Donald Trump and cannot handle reality?

Letter Lamenting the closure of UW-Baraboo

I have the blood of UW-Baraboo on my hands, and I won't wash it off.

I take partial responsibility for dissuading potential students from enrolling at the former UW Colleges (which became branches of the four-year universities), by having shared my regret over matriculating at that institution.
