Winter is a most inconvenient season. Snowy roads, icy steps and bitter cold. In so many ways, Mother Nature is trying to kill us. It was 20 below when I got up this morning and the house isn't much better because I have to leave the door to the greenhouse open when it's this cold so all my dear little plants don't freeze.

When we do small things and repeat them regularly, we make a difference.

I forgot Valentine’s Day! I had no excuse. There were plenty of reminders.

My wife asked, “Should we go out to eat or to a movie for Valentine’s Day next week?” and “Wouldn’t that make a good gift for Valentine’s Day?” Still, I forgot Valentine’s Day.

STANEK COLUMN: Cold weather, warm people

We’re so fortunate to live in an area with truly wonderful, caring people.

Despite the bitter, miserable cold, so many of you have shown kindness, patience, courtesy and grace.

Like many of you, I pay attention to state and national news, and that’s been a pretty depressing exercise lately.

Administrator's corner

As a rural district, we continue to adapt and meet the needs of our River Valley families.  One great example is our expanded 4K program and how it has grown to meet family and community needs.

STANEK COLUMN: Letters, we get letters

If you’re of a certain age, you may remember the letters song and bit from Letterman.

I was just a kid when David was big, but I still remember the excitement of him opening letters, and I loved the rambunctious red-haired announcer.

Turns out the song far pre-dates Letterman. It was sung by Perry Como.

Who are our real enemies? It seems like everyone is pointing in some direction, crying, "There they are!!:" "The white people are to blame! No! The brown people are to blame! No! It's the people in the red states! No! It's those blue state traitors! No! It's the lawyers! No! It's the immigrants! No! The real enemy is the rich! No!
