Sauk Prairie rolls in opener

It’s been said first impressions are the most telling. Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team is certainly hoping that’s the case. The Eagles got 21 points from Mallory Hartwig and 17 from Ava Brings and rolled past host Dodgeville, 66-36, on Nov. 21 in the season-opener for both teams.

Football Vanguards named all-league

Wisconsin Heights’ football team had a terrific season on the gridiron, going 6-2 overall and winning its final five games. So it was no surprise that the Vanguards were justly rewarded when it came to all-conference honors.

Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld landed four players on the all-Capitol South Conference team. Clockwise from top left: Junior forward Greyden Schomber was named first-team all-conference. Senior defender Terek Marx (2), freshman forward Eli Nicholes (18) and junior midfielder Tucker Acker (17) were all named honorable-mention all-conference.

Eagles’ girls picked for third

Editors Note: This preview of the Big Eight Conference girls basketball season was compiled by Wissports.net.   RECAP McFarland (22-6 overall) won the Badger Small championship with an unblemished 14-0 record. The Spartans finished one win away from the WIAA State Tournament, falling to West Salem, 65-61, in a Division 2 sectional final.

Weston Silver Eagle boys basketball plays season opener this week

Weston won six games last season in high school boys basketball action but the Silver Eagles were much more competitive than in other recent seasons and that momentum has new Head Coach Tracy Jennings excited heading into this season.

RWD boys hockey gets season underway this week

There will be several new faces that take the ice this season for the Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells/Mauston boys high school hockey co-op as some of the top contributors from last season have moved on such as forwards Trey Laridaen, Andrey Tougas and Brady Baldwin and defenseman Ike Elder among others.

The girls hockey season is underway for the Badger Lightning as the area high school co-op dropped a 3-0 season-opening decision to Arrowhead Saturday night at Sauk-Prairie’s rink.

Beaver girls split 2 on the road to begin the hoops season

Last Tuesday marked the first day that high school girls basketball teams in Wisconsin could play a regular season game. One of those teams was the Reedsburg Beavers who rallied from 10 points down in the second half to win in overtime at Fort Atkinson by a final score of 58-54 in the season opener.

Heights girls trending upward

Surprise, surprise. That’s what Wisconsin Heights girls basketball coach Tyler Fuchs hopes to be saying when March rolls around. The Vanguards went 4-18 last season and tied for fifth place in the six-team Capitol South Conference. With four starters back, though, Heights believes it can take a major leap forward.

Ready to roll

Call it the great unknown. There are many seasons where Sauk Prairie boys basketball coach Sean McGann has a good idea where his Eagles will fit in the Badger Small Conference race. This is not one of those years. Sauk Prairie brings back two starters from last year’s team that went 12-13 overall and finished third in the league at 8-6.
