Eagles aim to get back on track

Aaron Andres knew it would be a tough week. Just maybe not this tough. Andres, Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball coach, watched his Eagles drop three straight games last week. Reedsburg defeated Sauk Prairie, 78-47, on Jan. 19. Madison Edgewood downed the Eagles, 56-36, on Jan. 21 and Beaver Dam topped Sauk Prairie, 70-39, on Jan. 23.

Heights boys upended by Cambridge, New Glarus

Wisconsin Heights’ boys basketball team dropped a pair of games last week. New Glarus defeated the Vanguards, 73-61, on Jan. 19. Cambridge then edged Heights, 73-64, on Jan. 22. Heights fell to 2-5 overall and is 1-3 in the Capitol South Conference.

WIAC returning to action

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Council of Chancellors has voted unanimously to begin winter sports competition the week of Feb. 1, with all schedules featuring competition against only conference opponents.  Several former Mount Horeb High School athletes now compete in the WIAC.

Co-op hockey keeps rolling

Sauk Prairie’s co-op hockey team, which includes skaters from Mount Horeb, enjoyed another big week, winning two of three games. The Eagles cruised past Stoughton, 11-0, on Jan. 18, then suffered their first loss of the year, a 3-2 setback to Beaver Dam on Jan. 19. Sauk Prairie rebounded, though, and toppled Onalaska/La Crosse, 6-3, on Jan. 21.

Wrestling regionals begin on Saturday

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association revised the 2021 Individual and Team Wrestling Tournament Series assignments and procedures recently. Sauk Prairie will be in the Baraboo Regional that starts Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The rest of the regional will include Middleton, Mount Horeb, Reedsburg, Verona and Waunakee.

Radtke, River Valley alumni, wrestles at UW-Platteville

When junior wrestler Caleb Radtke, a River Valley High School graduate and son of James and Jaime Radtke of Spring Green, was in the process of choosing a school to wrestle at, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was high on the list due to his uncle wrestling for the Pointers.

River Valley wrestlers win double dual, head to regionals

The River Valley Blackhawks traveled to Belmont last Friday night for a double dual with Belmont/Platteville and Monroe. River Valley won both duals, with final scores of River Valley 30 – Belmont/Platteville 18 and River Valley 30 – Monroe 21.

River Valley/ Barneveld gymnasts see busy week

The River Valley/Barneveld gymnastics team had a busy week this past week with a dual against the Southwestern area co-op on Monday and the Viroqua Invite on Friday. The girls won the dual against Southwestern, which is comprised of Southwestern, Cuba City, Benton, and Darlington, with a score of 125.7500 to 122.8250.

Basketball games cancelled

The River Valley High School boys and girls basketball teams games were cancelled the week of January 18. The girls were scheduled to play this week on Monday at home against Dodgeville, on Tuesday at home against Highland and on Friday on the road against Platteville.

Eagles hit a rough patch

Sauk Prairie’s boys basketball team has gotten off to a terrific start this year. The Eagles hit some roadblocks last week, though, dropping two of three games. Sauk Prairie now sits at 6-3 on the season. Here’s a look back at the Eagles’ week:
