Hockey coach steps down


Neil Mattson announced this week that he is stepping away as Head Coach of the RWD Boys Hockey program after 25 years as a Head Coach for Reedsburg teams at the high school level. Mattson’s teams won 352 games, eight conference titles and earned a trip to the WIAA State Tournament two separate times as well. (Reedsburg Independent file photo)

It’s the end of an era for high school hockey in Reedsburg.

On Monday, longtime coach Neil Mattson announced he is handing over leadership duties. He cited personal health needs as the reason for his departure.

Beavers score 4 touchdowns but fall to La Crosse Central in 1st football game of 2024

After not getting the chance to play the first two scheduled games of the season, the Reedsburg Beaver football team was anxious to get back on the field last Friday as they opened the conference season in the MVC in La Crosse against the La Crosse Central Riverhawks.

Beaver volleyball rebounds Saturday after loss to Sauk Thursday

After winning five best-of-three non-conference matches to open the season at Wisconsin Rapids, the Reedsburg Beaver volleyball team opened the home schedule and the conference schedule last Thursday against a strong Sauk-Prairie team. The visiting Eagles flexed some muscle with a three-set sweep over the Beavers.

Eagles’ spikers have great expectations

Sauk Prairie’s girls volleyball team has become a state powerhouse in recent years. The Eagles reached the WIAA Division 2 state tournament in 2020 and 2022, finishing second overall in 2022. Sauk Prairie has gone 134-18 in the last four seasons — an 88.2 winning percentage — and won three Badger Small Conference titles in that time.

Eagles’ XC teams 3rd at Norski Invite

Sauk Prairie’s boys and girls cross country teams both finished in third place at the DeForest Norski Invite on Sept. 4. DeForest won the boys race with 28 points. Waunakee (50), Sauk Prairie (108), Reedsburg (109) and Janesville Parker (161) rounded out the top five.

Sauk Prairie’s girls tennis team had a tough week, losing all five of their matches. Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ week. • Lodi 5, Sauk Prairie 2 — The Eagles got straight set wins from No. 2 singles played Gillian Fritsch and No. 3 Stella Pacholke on Sept. 3, but couldn’t break through at any of the other flights.

North Crawford tops Heights

Uncharacteristic mistakes. Self-inflicted wounds. Abnormal gaffes. Wisconsin Heights’ football team had them all last Friday in a 26-12 loss to North Crawford, the state’s No. 7 team in 8-man football. The Vanguards fell to 1-1, while North Crawford improved to 2-0.
