Stanek column: Colder temperatures can drag you down

Turns out our ancestors may have been right when they said you’ll catch cold from being, well, out in the cold.

That’s not to say you’ll get sick just from being outside without a coat. Rather, your body is more susceptible to infection when it’s exposed to cold air and wet conditions.

If you know me, you may consider me a demented bleeding heart liberal tree-hugger. I might argue with the demented part, but the rest of it fits. I do care passionately about people and the earth and trees, in particular. I believe deeply that we are all brothers and sisters, a giant human family, and anything that helps any of us helps us all.

“I wish I could take it all away,” Mom whispered to her suffering 5-year-old son. He had the flu for a couple of days now, and Mom’s heart was broken. There wasn’t much Mom could do except give him some children’s flu medicine and just be there for him. Mom felt helpless and wished she could take it all away from him.

My wife recently made me happy when she told me that we could get a pickup truck when our older car bites the dust. I was excited at the thought of getting an electric pickup truck, but worried about the lack of charging stations.
