Beavers blanked by McFarland on soccer pitch

Still in search of the first win of the conference season, the Reedsburg Beaver Boys Soccer team fell, 5-0, to a state-ranked McFarland team at RAHS.

The Beavers continue to conduct business with a short-handed lineup but the Beavers fall to 0-5 in the Badger Small schedule, giving up four first-half goals.

Beaver football reclaims Old River Jug with win over Baraboo

Beaver Football Coach Calvin Zenz indicated that perhaps the number one goal coming into each season for his players is to either reclaim or keep possession of the Old River Jug, which goes to the winner of the annual Reedsburg vs. Baraboo game.

The rivals have played 137 times since 1900.

Eagles closing in on a title

MOUNT HOREB — It was an atmosphere befitting a conference championship match. And the girls volleyball teams from Sauk Prairie and Mount Horeb certainly didn’t disappoint. The Eagles earned at least a share of the Badger Small Conference dual match title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the host Vikings on Oct. 1.

Hanging by a thread

Big plays have been the bane of the Sauk Prairie defense this season. Last Friday night, it was host Portage that used three long touchdowns – two on the ground and one in the air – to cruise to a 34-17 victory over the Vikings in a Badger Small Conference matchup.

Eagles’ soccer team heating up

The postseason is almost here. And Sauk Prairie’s boys soccer team is picking the perfect time to get hot. The Eagles rolled past Baraboo, 5-1, on Oct. 1. Sauk Prairie then bested Tomah, 8-4, on Oct. 4. Sauk Prairie improved to 6-7-2 overall and 4-1 in the Badger Small Conference. Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ week:

Sauk Prairie’s girls cross country team finished fourth at the Platteville Invite last Saturday. Sauk Prairie’s boys also had a terrific day, finishing ninth out of 26 teams.

Vanguards roll past Monticello

The beat goes on. And boy, what a rhythm it’s been. Wisconsin Heights’ football team rolled to its third straight convincing win last Friday, routing visiting Monticello, 56-20. The Vanguards improved to 4-2 overall and are 3-2 in the Ridge & Valley 8 Conference.

Vanguards drop a pair

Graham Crowe and the Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld boys soccer team dropped a pair of games last week. Sugar River defeated the Vanguards, 1-0, on Oct. 1. River Valley also downed Heights/Barneveld, 3-0, on Oct. 3. The Vanguards were at Richland Center Monday, traveled to Lodi Tuesday and are at Columbus Thursday at 4 p.m.

Heights spikers impress at Rio

Wisconsin Heights’ girls volleyball team went 3-1 at the Rio Invitational last Saturday and finished second overall. “We had a solid day,” Heights coach Katie Doescher said. “Our girls really played together as a team and it was noticeable.”
